Reading Futures Receives Innovation Grant from Accelerate

We are delighted to announce that Reading Futures will receive a $150,000 Innovation Grant from Accelerate, a national nonprofit working to make high-impact tutoring a standard feature of the American school day.

This grant will enable us to improve, expand, and study our work with Muncie Community Schools, supporting their most struggling readers via small-group virtual intervention. Our interventions in grades 2-4 were specifically developed for and evaluated with children at or below the 16th percentile on reading measures, building on Dr. Maryanne Wolf’s research. We provide certified and well-trained teachers to deliver intense “tier 3” instruction, and work to engage a complete community of care around each child.

Accelerate’s CEO Kevin Huffman is looking for results:

“The evidence behind tutoring as an intervention is strong and the field is making tremendous progress, but we still need more providers with a proven track record that can also scale. Before the federal pandemic relief dollars dry up, we have an opportunity – and a responsibility – to identify these providers and ensure they are able to deliver cost-effective programs and present evidence that they get results for kids.”

We are focused on delivering results for the most struggling readers, including those with indications or characteristics of dyslexia. We are especially focused on reaching students from historically underserved communities. Our goal is to scale effective intervention for these students, building on a strong research base. We are incredibly grateful for Accelerate’s support, for our partnership with Muncie Community Schools, and for the chance to help a next generation of students build their own reading futures.
